On the 22nd August 1642 King Charles raised the Royal Standard at Nottingham Castle which began the English Civil War.

The South East, Anglia, Lincolnshire parts of the Midlands aligned with the Parliament. Cornwall, western England, including Wales and Lancaster aligned with the King and the Royalist cause.
In the north, the four northern most counties, Northumberland, Durham, Cumberland and Westmorland supported the Royalists. Yorkshire was split. The East Riding and the West Riding area around Leeds and Bradford were for Parliament. North Riding would follow the Royalist cause.
